What is an Ulcer?

The peptic ulcer is the loss of substance which occurs in the regions of the digestive apparatus exposed to the actions of hydrochloric acid and of pepsin. The loss of the integrity of the mucous should last at least two weeks and that the lesion should cross the middle layer of the gastric wall in order to be considered an ulcer. It manifests itself with constant abdominal pain, burning, discomfort similar to hunger, it can appear in the upper, middle portion of the mouth of the stomach or toward the sides of the middle line, generally to the right. It is usual that it not be irradiated unless pancreatic penetration occurs. Usually it is initiated between two and four hours after meals and it may wake up the patient during the night.

The ingestion of food or antacids relieves it until the cycle begins again, (a weight gain is also possible). Other symptoms include: a change in defecation habits and pyrosis (retrosternal burning sensation).

In the case of the gastric ulcer a feeling of inflammation and nausea, indigestion, ponderal changes, anorexia and episodes of gastrointestinal hemorrhaging are common.

Two of the factors that produce ulcers are:
Aggressive factors such as acid, pepsin, anti-inflammatories and the bacteria, Helicobacter pylori. And the deterioration of the body's defenses such as mucous and bicarbonate.

The predisposing factors are tobacco which limits recovery and increases complications, associated illnesses (liver, kidneys), old age, and stress or emotional tension.
